I hope you are enjoying the holidays with friends and loved ones. As 2024 draws to a close, my team and I are reflecting on the work our office has done this past year and are gearing up to tackle the challenges of 2025.

In 2024 we focused our work and advocacy on fighting the devastating affordability crisis. While we have a long way to go to make New York City truly affordable for all, 2024 ushered in some major victories for New Yorkers.

We took bold action in Manhattan and across the city, overhauling outdated zoning regulations that restricted new housing. This effort, the “City of Yes” plan, modernizes zoning for more housing, especially affordable options, across the five boroughs and could lead to the creation of 80,000 badly needed residential units.

In Albany, we fought for and won new legislation that will encourage the creation of much more housing and provide much-needed relief for renters.

And here in Manhattan we fast-tracked projects to create affordable units.

We also focused on continuing to make our city truly liveable for all New Yorkers by tackling key quality-of-life concerns.

We advocated for a stronger mental health system, pushing for increased investment, easier access to care, and solutions that break the cycle of failing to get those who need treatment the care they deserve.

We’ve worked to reduce vehicles with fake license plates (“ghost plates”) that speed past our schools and through red lights, and have worked to curb excessive sidewalk sheds that cover our sidewalks for years, sometimes even decades.

And because we know that families need support, we’ve supported expanding access to affordable, high-quality childcare, helping parents balance work and family.

Looking ahead, we know we have a lot of work to do to make our communities stronger and deliver for New Yorkers. Local government will be more important than ever. I am committed to this fight but I’m going to need your help – I need your expertise, experience, and priorities to help shape the future of our neighborhoods.

Want to get involved?

Apply to your local Community Education Council or Precinct Community Council to have your say on issues like land use, schools, and public safety.
My office also offers a fellowship program for high school students, providing hands-on experience in government and community leadership.
Join your neighbors in the Manhattan Volunteer Corps! With over 700 members, the Corps provides opportunities to volunteer on important projects that make a real difference in our borough, from cleaning up parks to mentoring youth.
And stay tuned! Applications for community boards will be opening in January. Serving on your local community board is a fantastic way to get involved and have a direct impact on shaping your neighborhood. More information on how to apply is coming soon.

In 2025, we’ll be laser-focused on turning these policy victories into tangible results for Manhattanites. I’m inspired every day by the creativity, energy, and determination of Manhattanites and New Yorkers. I’m committed to building a more equitable and affordable Manhattan where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. That’s what we’re fighting for in 2025, and I know you are too.
