NEW YORK : Even though last week’s Mega Millions jackpot was won elsewhere, New York State’s public schools and Lottery retailers won big with ticket sales and commissions totaling $55.8 million during the most recent jackpot rollup.
“New York’s schools and small businesses always win, even if the lottery jackpot is hit elsewhere,” said New York State Gaming Commission Chair Brian O’Dwyer. “The New York Lottery generates significant revenue for public education and lottery retailers statewide, and we are proud to deliver on that mission.”
The multi-state Mega Millions jackpot started building September 13, 2024 and culminated in the December 27, 2024 drawing for $1.22 billion. During that time, Mega Millions ticket sales in New York State generated $47.6 million for public schools and $8.2 million for lottery retailers – many of which are small businesses.
In addition, New York State sold 75 winning Mega Millions prizes of at least $10,000 during the four-month rollup, including:
- 4 Mega Millions second prize winners of $1 million;
- 3 Megaplier third prize winners of $40,000;
- 4 Megaplier third prize winners of $30,000;
- 3 Megaplier third prize winners of $20,000; and
- 61 Mega Millions third prize winners of $10,000.
The New York Lottery continues to be North America’s largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing $3.8 billion in Lottery Aid to Education for FY 2023-2024 to help support education in New York State.
