Independent Autopsy Leaves Cause of Nolan Wells’ Death Undetermined as Family Seeks Answers

Attorney Ben Crump says preliminary findings raise new questions; investigation remains active as authorities await further evidence

BROOKLYN/NEW YORK – July 25, 2026: The family of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells has released the preliminary findings of an independent autopsy, which concluded that both the cause and manner of his death remain undetermined, intensifying calls for a full and transparent investigation into the promising college football player’s mysterious death.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the Wells family, announced the results during a July 22 news conference. The independent examination was conducted by renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell and funded by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick following concerns raised by Wells’ family regarding the official investigation.

Wells, a football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College, disappeared after a Fourth of July trip with friends to Mississippi’s Horn Island. After an extensive search, authorities recovered his body on July 6, sparking widespread public interest and national media attention.

According to Dr. Mitchell’s preliminary report, investigators were unable to determine the exact cause of death due to several unresolved factors, including the absence of critical information regarding how Wells entered the water and the precise circumstances under which his body was discovered. The report also noted that advanced decomposition, the prior state-conducted autopsy, and the lack of toxicology results limited the scope of the independent examination.

One of the most notable observations cited in the report was a dark red discoloration on tissue near the back of Wells’ head, adjacent to the occipital bone. While the finding was documented, Dr. Mitchell stated that additional investigation would be necessary before drawing any conclusions regarding its significance.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety confirmed that the State Medical Examiner completed its initial autopsy on July 7. However, officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing, declining to comment on the independent autopsy or speculate on its findings.

Authorities have stated that investigators have not found evidence of foul play at this stage. Once the investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is completed, the case will be forwarded to Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath for presentation before a grand jury, a standard legal procedure for unexplained or unnatural deaths in the county.

Despite those assurances, Wells’ family continues to question the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. Attorney Ben Crump said the family does not believe the teenager accidentally drowned, noting that Wells was known as a strong swimmer.

Additional concerns have centered on Wells’ cellphone. Family members allege that recent Snapchat activity appeared to have been deleted before the phone was returned, while investigators are also aware of a video reportedly showing an argument involving Wells shortly before he disappeared. Individuals present on the trip have disputed claims regarding the video’s contents.

During Wells’ funeral service on July 20, attended by community leaders, athletes, and public figures, his parents remembered him as a young man with a “gentle, calming spirit.” The service was funded by filmmaker Tyler Perry, while notable attendees included filmmaker Spike Lee, former NFL star Terrell Owens, and civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton.

Sharpton announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest or conviction in the case, with Tyler Perry pledging to match the amount. Terrell Owens later contributed an additional $25,000, bringing the total reward to $125,000.

Attorney Ben Crump has urged anyone with credible information regarding Nolan Wells’ disappearance or death to contact investigators, stressing that the family remains committed to seeking the truth.

As investigators continue gathering forensic evidence and reviewing witness statements, the unanswered questions surrounding Nolan Wells’ death remain at the center of a case that has attracted nationwide attention and renewed calls for transparency and accountability.
