Tomorrow, the Council’s Committee on Immigration will hold an oversight hearing on the mayoral administration’s preparedness to protect New York City’s immigrant communities under the new presidential administration. New York City is home to a diverse population of over 3 million immigrants, including naturalized citizens, permanent legal residents, and undocumented immigrants. The incoming federal administration has signaled that it will take various actions related to immigration, including conducting the largest deportation operation in history, revoking existing Temporary Protected Status designations, and reinstating barriers to prevent additional immigrants from obtaining permanent legal status. The Committee will seek to understand how Mayor Adams’ Administration has prepared City agencies, workers and contractors to ensure compliance with existing local laws, respond to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity at sensitive locations, address community concerns, and provide additional support to New Yorkers.
The Committee will also hear two proposed resolutions. Resolution 2970, sponsored by Council Member Shahana Hanif, calls on the State Legislature to reintroduce and pass, and the Governor to sign, the New York for All Act. Resolution 2917, sponsored by Council Member Crystal Hudson, calls on the State Legislature to pass, and the Governor to sign A.270/S.141, also known as the Access to Representation Act.
