BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — Today, Councilmember Chris Banks endorsed Justin Brannan for New York City Comptroller, adding to Brannan’s expanding list of supporters from across the five boroughs. Banks—who represents East New York, Brownsville, Starrett City, and parts of East Flatbush—praised Brannan’s record of standing up for working-class New Yorkers, NYCHA tenants, and communities long left behind. “Justin Brannan doesn’t just talk a big game on the issues that matter most to me and my constituents—he consistently gets results while battling reckless cuts and comes through for New Yorkers,” said Councilmember Banks. “He was instrumental in saving the NYCHA senior security guard program, protecting our most vulnerable residents and the workers who keep them safe. From defending public housing to standing up for working-class New Yorkers, Justin takes on the hard fights. He understands the challenges our neighborhoods face, especially in communities of color where disinvestment has gone unchecked for decades. I trust him to ensure every penny of the city’s budget is spent wisely, to relentlessly demand transparency, and to make sure every corner of Brooklyn—and every borough—gets its fair share.” Banks, a lifelong Brooklynite and proud son of a Trinidadian immigrant mother, has spent his career focused on supporting tenants, as well as improving public housing, public safety, and economic opportunity. As Chair of the City Council’s Finance Committee, Brannan has led with the belief that the budget is a moral document—and now he’s running for Comptroller to ensure it delivers for working families. His platform centers on public safety, affordability, and accountability, with a focus on universal child care, climate action, housing for city workers, stronger oversight of city spending, and a more fair, transparent city budget. “Chris Banks is exactly the kind of public servant New Yorkers should dream of representing them—with deep roots in his community, a strong sense of justice, and relentless in delivering for them,” said Justin Brannan. “I could not be more grateful to have Chris’ support, and as Comptroller, I’ll work alongside him to make sure our city budget delivers real results for the families who’ve too often been left out and left behind.” Brannan’s endorsement adds to a growing wave of support from local elected officials as the race for Comptroller heats up, including Rep. Nydia Velázquez, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, state Sens. Andrew Gounardes, Leroy Comrie, Robert Jackson, Gustavo Rivera, Julia Salazar, Jabari Brisport and James Sanders Jr., Assembly Members Jo Anne Simon, Robert Carroll, Claire Valdez, Khaleel Anderson, Phara Souffrant Forrest, and Emily Gallagher, New York City Council Members Amanda Farías, Selvena Brooks-Powers, Lincoln Restler, Alexa Avilés, Jennifer Gutiérrez, Althea Stevens, Sandy Nurse, Kamillah Hanks, Tiffany Cabán, Kevin Riley, Nantasha Williams and Yusef Salaam. |
