Punjab rolls out free public transport, fuel subsidies in major relief drive
In response to soaring fuel prices and ongoing global economic pressures, the Punjab government has introduced a comprehensive relief package offering free public transport and financial support for farmers and motorcyclists.
Announcing the initiative, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said that commuters across the province will be able to travel free of charge on major public transport systems, including the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electric Bus services.
The package also includes support for the agricultural sector, with farmers set to receive a diesel subsidy of Rs 100 per litre per acre to help ease rising cultivation costs.
Motorcyclists have also been included in the relief measures. Under the plan, each registered bike owner will benefit from a subsidy of Rs 100 on up to 20 litres of fuel.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for ensuring the stability of petroleum supply and prices in the country for a month despite global challenges. She said that billions of rupees in relief were provided in a short period to protect citizens from economic strain, even in a difficult fiscal environment.
She emphasized that the government stands with the public during tough times and encouraged people to shift towards public transport to reduce expenses. Highlighting the broader situation, she noted that global conflict has significantly disrupted the world economy, with Pakistan being particularly impacted due to its dependence on imported oil.
However, she expressed optimism that economic relief would follow as conditions improve.
The announcement comes after a sharp increase in fuel prices by the federal government, with petrol rising to Rs 458.41 per litre and high-speed diesel reaching Rs 520.35 per litre. The petroleum levy on petrol has also been significantly raised, while subsidies on fuel have been withdrawn in line with IMF requirements.
