Here’s what I’ve been listening to this year other than 1010 WINS, apparently:
CHRISTMAS TREES
This week we saw a slate of successful tree lighting ceremonies at Owl’s Head Park, Carey Gardens, and Cannonball Park. I’m particularly happy about the Cannonball tree, which I saw a few years ago in the off-season and realized was *perfect* for the occasion. Thanks to our friends at NIA, Bay Ridge Cares, Xaverian, the Guild for Exceptional Children, Narrows Community Theater, BRAVO, and Gargiulo’s for helping to make these spirited events happen
A WIN FOR VINLAND: Last week we officially cut the ribbon on the brand new Vinland Playground located inside Shore Road Park near 94th Street and it looks beautiful! When I was a kid, this park had a big truck tire on a rusty chain and that was our swing. Life is filled with full circle moments but this one was very special for me. This is the playground I grew up in. And I think it was only ever renovated once since I was a kid. I hope generations of kids will enjoy this new playground right in their backyard!
TOY DRIVE FOR A GOOD CAUSE:
A great local organization called Little Golden Light provides support and assistance to children with pediatric cancer and their families. This year they are running a holiday toy drive to benefit these families with three drop-off sites in Bay Ridge. Please support their work by donating an unwrapped toy before 12/13!
MAKEOVER FOR SHORE ROAD PARK: Last week, Senator Gounardes and I officially announced that necessary funding has been secured to completely reimagine the Shore Road Park promenade from the 69th Street Pier to the Verrazzano Bridge.
Growing up, Shore Road Park was my backyard so I’m proud to partner with Senator Gounardes to deliver the world-class waterfront park southern Brooklyn deserves. A dream come true! Read more details on the plan here.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE WEEKEND:
SUBWAY SERVICE: Trains have some modifications overnight this weekend. Check out more details here.
HOLIDAY ON THE BASE: Our friends at the Fort Hamilton Army Base are hosting their 9th annual Holiday Market and Tree Lighting Spectacular event, TONIGHT (12/6 Friday) from 4-8pm, adjacent to the 101st Street Main Gate entrance. The tree lighting will occur around 5:30pm. There will be live music and a charming Marketplace to stroll through, filled with handcrafted treasures, unique gifts, and delicious treats from our local food vendors, plus an opportunity for the little ones to take pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
KAISER PARK TREE LIGHTING: Looking ahead to next week, the tree lighting at Kaiser Park will take place on Thursday, December 12th at 6PM, and will include performances from Coney Island Sharkettes, Coney Island Cathedral Choir, and more!
